Paradoxes, Anomalies, and Black Swans – Tell Me More

Not long ago, I had the most intriguing conversation about Paradoxes, and as we discussed this, we got diverted into a dialogue on Black Swans, Anomalies, and the differences between all three. Apparently, my acquaintance happened to be taking a writing class and was working on how to use paradoxes in poetry, and display words which could mean the opposite at times, or how sentences could have two meanings, exactly and diametrically opposed.

Yes, it is quite common in the language and a big challenge with interpreters. I sometimes use such sentences to see how someone will take them. One interesting sentence, the shortest possible one is “I am” because if you say it with a question mark you are asking someone “oh really, I am?” and if you say it the way it is you are making a statement “Why, yes, I am!” and you could easily be challenging someone because you “aren’t” and you know it.

One way to feel someone out psychologically is to put such sentences into words and see how they interpret it, or what type of response it triggers, sometimes a sentence without changes in punctuation can mean two different contradictory things. Language is interesting.

For instance that famous Twilight Zone, where the title of the book was; “To Serve Man” when it was not to serve them but how to “Cook Them” and that of course is the most interesting of all. You see, lots gets missed in communication, and often folks take advantage of such language anomalies.

Anomalies are things out of the ordinary, not expected in the pattern, just like paradoxes are not expected. After all, when something means the opposite of what it says, it is out of the ordinary, and not expected. This does not mean that all anomalies are exact paradoxes, they may or may not be, but paradoxes are most often anomalies of language.

A Black Swan even is an anomaly out of the blue, so big it changes everything, sometimes it can even become a paradox. For instance, what BP oil company thought was the biggest oil find of the decade which would ensure massive profits for decades to come, may be the very thing that causes them to go into bankruptcy. Anyway, please consider all this.
