Laughter Makes the World Go Round
Humour Can Be Serious
I thought we’d turn our attention to something a little lighter today. The study of humour. Serious study, of course. You know me. I never allow any levity to creep into my articles. Levity means laughter, and laughter induces loose morals. Need I go on?
But never dismiss humour. It’s a mistake. Under dictatorships, comedians are seen as a threat and humour’s always been banned. Now why should this be? A laughing population’s a happy population, surely? Ah, but how many dictators have you seen who laugh? Unless they’re wiping out a few million people, and even then it’s pretty grim laughter.
No, as far as monsters like this are concerned, humour’s banned because it shines the light of truth in all the dark corners, it breaks the shackles of narrow thinking and makes the self-important, figures of fun.
Humour shows a lack of fear and no tyrant can accept this. But the extraordinary thing is, that when you think about it, we all live in a dictatorship. We do. I’m not trying to be funny. We live under our own personal psychological dictatorships.
We box ourselves in with our limiting beliefs, make rules for ourselves which we consider unbreakable, that we’re inferior to other people and that life can’t possibly be good because if it was, then we wouldn’t have any more money worries and we’d have everything we wanted.
None of these bars we put up nor walls we build; none of them are real. We allow our minds to be our dictators. We could escape into that wonderful land of plenty with a little bit of effort and less fear of what other people may think about us.
Humour can help us. Not only does it lift the burden of stress which we, or others, place on ourselves, it gives us a different perspective on life.
It’s been known for a long time now, and I’m sure you’ve heard it too, that laughter can prolong life. In fact, laughter has a whole slew of health benefits that these days especially are our’s for the taking. I say ‘these days especially,’ because all we need do is to rent a comedy video or CD, take it home and laugh our heads off, doing ourselves a world of good in the process.
A good belly laugh is one of the best work-outs we can give ourselves. It’s a great stress reducer and floods us with endorphins, those natural feel-good hormones.
It’s most interesting to note how great leaders have always instinctively known when.. and when not.. to use humour.
I suppose the master of them all was Sir Winston Churchill, but Ronald Reagan and Lady Margaret Thatcher were pretty close behind him. Love ‘em or hate ‘em, they could come out with some beauties!
